Abu Jahal And The Tree Of Zakum

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ (43) طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ (44) كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ (45) كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ (46) خُذُوهُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ (47) ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِيمِ (48) ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ (49) إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِ تَمْتَرُونَ (50)

 

Ab Jahal the uncle of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) used to mock the Holy Quran when Allah (swt) reveals new Ayats.

The Tree Of Zakum

Allah (swt) revealed the Aya about the tree of zakum in the hell fire:

 إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ (43) طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ (44)

The revelation of these 2 Ayas made Abu Jahal mocks and laughs on this type of torment for unbelievers in Hellfire. One day Abu Jahal was eating dates and butter with his friends, he said to them “Tazakamu” which means eat this “Zakum” as he was mocking the Aya and the torment of Allah in fire.

Then Allah (swt) revealed the following Aya:

 إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ (64)

(64) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,
Abu Jahal liked that people to call him with his praised nickname (Al Aziz Al Kareem) which translates in english as the honored the noble. Allah (swt) tells us what for Abu Jahal and alike in Hellfire of the tree of Zakum in the following ayas:
إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ (43) طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ (44) كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ (45) كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ (46) خُذُوهُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ (47) ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِيمِ (48) ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ (49) إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِ تَمْتَرُونَ (50)
(43) Indeed, the tree of zaqqum
(44) Is food for the sinful.
(45) Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
(46) Like the boiling of scalding water.
(47) [It will be commanded], “Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
(48) Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water.”
(49) [It will be said], “Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!
(50) Indeed, this is what you used to dispute.”
Allah (swt) describes for us the tree of Zaqqum in Surat Al Saaffat:
 أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ(62) إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّالِمِينَ (63) إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ (64) طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُ رُءُوسُ الشَّيَاطِينِ (65) فَإِنَّهُمْ لَآكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ (66) ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ (67) ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى الْجَحِيمِ (68) 
(62) Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum?
(63) Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.
(64) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,
(65) Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.
(66) And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.
(67) Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.
(68) Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.
